Sr. Cost Accountant 

Opelika, AL 

The Sr. Cost Accountant is responsible for applying principles of cost accounting to ensure the integrity of cost data, and statistical procedures to administer systems and report cost data, such as product standard costs, material and manufacturing variances, operation costs, and daily production results. This role provides periodic financial support to operations management for process analysis and improvement efforts, resource use and allocation for effective decision-making process. The Sr. Cost Accountant reports to the Assistant Operations Controller. 

Key Responsibilities 

Critical contributions this role is counted on to deliver include: 

  • Assists Plant Controller for all accounting and financial activities of the Opelika facility, including but not limited to month end close, account reconciliations, variances analysis, forecast, and budget 

 

  • Prepares and analyzes monthly material and manufacturing variances, inventory reserves, inventory movement, costs of sales, and system cost flows; evaluates existing cost system reporting; investigates and resolves discrepancies in cost and variance data 

 

  • Maintains and monitors standard costs on a daily and monthly basis; provides feedback to Procurement to facilitate changes to purchased standards 

 

  • Prepares monthly Operations Financial Performance Package and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and bring more meaningful data and information to support the Operations Team 

  • Perform in depth analysis of work order variances such as rework, scrap, and material yield/usage variances. 

  • Conducts ad-hoc analyses as needed to support operational decision making and improve profitability.

You're a self-starter with the ability to shift focus and priorities in a fast-paced environment. This individual will collaborate with the operations team to better understand manufacturing and logistics processes. You will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

You’ll be most successful in this role if you have: 

  • Self-motivation, drive, and sense of urgency to meet deadlines while maintaining strong relationships with internal business partners 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for process improvements 

  • The ability to think 'big-picture' and understand the key trends and levers that drive a business 

  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision 

  • Demonstrated clear and concise communication skills 

Capabilities & Skills Required 

In order to take on these challenges, you’ll need to have: 

  • 2-5 years experience in Cost Accounting, financial modeling, and analysis in a Manufacturing environment. 

  • Bachelor’s its equivalent in Accounting or business-related field 

  • Competent knowledge in cost accounting, inventory control, and general accounting principles 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access 

  • Experience in JDEdwards, Oracle, or related ERP system

Annual Pay

Annual Pay Range

$81,600.00 - $122,400.00

This represents the minimum and maximum base salary range for this role, plus annual incentive. Various elements are used to determine a candidate’s starting salary such as job experience, specific skills, and comparison to internal incumbents currently in the role.  This information is provided to applicants in accordance with state and local laws.
