The R&D Manager, Alternate Forms is responsible for management of Product Development activities and personnel to generate new products from bench top to commercialization. This role is responsible for a portfolio of gummy and alternate form projects including early investigation, development of new products and maintenance of existing products. The R&D Manager, Alternate Forms reports to the Director R&D, Alternate Forms and manages a team of formulation professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Critical contributions this role is counted on to deliver include:
Effectively manages all technical aspects of the product development process from bench-top through commercialization and post-launch support.
Manages portfolio of product development projects, ensuring that all projects have clearly defined objectives, resources and plans to deliver on-time launches. Balances project assignments and workload across the broader Alternate Forms team.
Supports Innovation team during Discovery, manages workflow and evaluates the technical feasibility of new concepts, leveraging a risk-based approach.
Collaborates with Marketing and other cross-functional disciplines to accomplish innovation and renovation goals.
Communicates technical issues and status of projects to management. Assures timely reporting of progress on projects and escalation of critical issues.
Partners with other R&D leaders to establish, align and enforce standard practices. Collaborates across scientific disciplines within the department in trouble-shooting complex issues.
Reviews and approves product development documentation including technical summaries, material qualifications, change documentation and stability reports.
Manages a team of up to 8 formulators with a broad range of experience. Manages performance, creates development plans and coaches direct reports for growth.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate has strong formulation and process development skills. They demonstrate sound leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills to facilitate interaction with internal cross-functional team members, outside vendors, and consultants.
Critical Success Factors:
You’ll be most successful in this role if you have:
Thorough understanding of all aspects of the product development process (bench-top formulation, pilot process development, scale up, commercialization and reliability post-launch).
In-depth knowledge and practical experience with formulation and manufacture of gummy products.
Track record of accountability to project teams, delivering on-time and on-target and driving alignment with cross-functional partners.
Demonstrated expertise in formulation and process scale-up, process verifiation using statistical analysis. Experienced with Design of Experiments.
Demonstrated ability to apply a risk-based approach to managing change.
Demonstrated leadership skills, ability to influence and track record of successful cross-functional collaboration.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Capabilities & Skills Required
In order to take on these challenges, you’ll need to have:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Food Science or related science. Advanced degree is a plus.
A minimum of 5-8 years of experience in product development of dietary supplements, food and beverage, or pharmaceuticals from bench-top to commercialization. Hands-on expereince with gummy formulation and processing strongly preferred.
Prior experience managing or supervising scientific professionals such as Formulators, Chemists or Process Engineers is preferred. Experience in nutraceutical, supplement, confectionary or pharmaceutical development is preferred.
Ability to travel up to 25%

Annual Pay Range
$140,100.00 - $210,100.00This represents the minimum and maximum base salary range for this role, plus annual incentive. Various elements are used to determine a candidate’s starting salary such as job experience, specific skills, and comparison to internal incumbents currently in the role.
