The Principal Nutrition Scientist serves as an internal and external expert scientist in the field of nutrition science (including botanicals, vitamins, minerals and other dietary ingredients), and dietary supplementation.  Has a deep understanding of nutrition science, with a particular interest and expertise in botanicals, vitamins, minerals, or other area of nutritionEnsures scientific evidence supports product safety and efficacy through scientific due diligence and management of clinical trialsIdentifies and provides scientific guidance for new products, technologies, and other business initiatives that support business strategies and objectives. Reports to the Manager of Nutrition Science.

Key Responsibilities

Critical contributions this role is counted on to deliver include: 

  • Serves as the subject matter for botanical ingredients

  • Independently provides scientific analysis/interpretation, due diligence, and technical fortitude for product formulations, labeling and advertising claims, consumer and trade promotions within your subject matter expertise. Provide scientific foundation for consumer-facing materials and external affairs.  

  • Effectively communicates accurate scientific information in concise, consumer friendly language for development of consumer-facing materials and communications.   

  • Actively assesses new product development projects to proactively identify areas that will require assistance, solicits cross-functional partners help as needed, and drives cross-functional team alignment to deliver project milestones from ingredient feasibility and discovery stage project through commercialization.  

  • Develops internally supported research projects and/or research pipeline strategies across short, medium, and long-term time horizons. Ensures research projects are completed on time.

  • Independently interfaces with academic and research institutions in early discovery opportunities to support development of new products or to enhance post-commercialization brand and product messaging. 

  • Serves on cross-functional project teams as a communicator on nutrition matters within subject matter expertise to deliver timely results.

  • Leads submission of intellectual property and/or publication of scientific research projects in high impact peer-reviewed, trade and consumer-facing journals to align with business priorities within scientific subject matter expertise and more broadly across various need states.  

  • Proactively uses strong network of scientific advisors and consultants to solve complex issues. Lead communication on overarching nutrition matters.   

  • Leverages new scientific information related to dietary supplements and dietary ingredients within subject matter expertise & beyond into business opportunities with cross-functional buy-in. Provides education to key cross-functional partners Marketing, Consumer Affairs to ensure cross-functional teams can meet business deadlines. Identifying emerging areas.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate brings two-three years of experience in a similar role in nutrition, food or pharmaceutical sciences, particularly in the botanical areaYou identify and provide scientific guidance for new products, technologies, and other business initiatives that support business strategies and objectivesClinical and pre-clinical study design, development, and execution is desired

Critical Success Factors

You’ll be most successful in this role if you have:  

  • Experience with botanical ingredients.

  • Ability to apply knowledge of human physiology and clinical nutrition to meet consumer needs.

  • Demonstrated skills in critical analysis of scientific results, and translation of scientific results to claims. 

  • Demonstrated skills in conducting scientific research by critical thinking, evaluation of existing research, study design, and analysis and interpretation of scientific data. 

  • Demonstrated skills in collaborating cross-functionally, prioritization, time management, and project management from planning to delivery of results. 

  • Proficient in managing technical partnerships. 

  • Proficient in managing IP and patent review. 

  • Ability to translate and communicate complex scientific principles to non-scientists. 

  • Ability to continually integrate new learnings with existing knowledge. 

Capabilities & Skills Required

In order to take on these challenges, you’ll need to have: 

  • Advanced degree (PhD, MD, DO, PharmD, MS, etc.) in Nutrition Science, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or related field. 

  • A PhD degree plus a minimum of 6 years, or a Master's degree plus a minimum of 12 years of experience in scientific studies evaluation for product claim development, clinical trial design, development, and execution is required. 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including confidence with public speaking and engagement with presenting to employees, customers, and scientific peers. 

  • Proven track record of presenting and publishing in the field of nutrition sciences and/or botanical ingredients for human health.  

  • Strong knowledge in physiology, nutrition, and botanical science. 

  • A minimum of 10-20% travel via car or plane is expected.

Annual Pay

Annual Pay Range

$140,100.00 - $210,100.00

This represents the minimum and maximum base salary range for this role, plus annual incentive. Various elements are used to determine a candidate’s starting salary such as job experience, specific skills, and comparison to internal incumbents currently in the role.  This information is provided to applicants in accordance with state and local laws.
